19th of August - World Humanitarian Day!

19/08/17

Coordination Office of South Caucasus Mission

Every year on 19 August, World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is widely marked by the United Nations and its partners.  WHD was established by the United Nations General Assembly to pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the 2003 bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq, which killed 22 United Nations staff. WHD brings the world together to rally support for people affected by humanitarian crises and pay tribute to aid workers who help them.

This year, the United Nations and OCHA will lead a global online campaign using the hashtag #NotATarget, which was launched last year by Médecins Sans Frontières following the hospital bombing in Kunduz, Afghanistan.  The campaign will utilize the content and findings of the 2017 United Nations Secretary-General’s Report on Protection of Civilians – launched in May 2017 – to provide credible and impartial information to support this year’s WHD celebrations.
Action Against Hunger is joining the campaign. Every day, aid workers save lives in conflicts and disasters, braving tremendous challenges and risks. On World Humanitarian Day (19 August), we remember and pay tribute to those heroic colleagues who have lost their lives in humanitarian service. Aid workers are #NotATarget.
