14/06/19

In February 2019, Action Against Hunger launched a new project entitled “Promoting inclusive and participatory local development in Akhmeta Municipality”.  The opening ceremony took place in the newly-built Municipal House of Culture in Akhmeta on 22nd February.

Action Against Hunger, together with its local partner organisation, the Kakheti Regional Development Foundation (KRDF), presented the project objectives and introduced to the audience the new community-led local development approach promoted by the European Union.

Action Against Hunger South Caucasus Regional Director Marcella Maxfield gave the inaugural speech. Other opening remarks were also delivered by European Union Ambassador to Georgia, Carl Hartzell, the KRDF Executive Director Tamar Bekauri and Action Against Hunger Program Manager, Giorgi Santuryan, who is in charge of the Akhmeta project. The event was attended by local authorities, members of the national press and more than 150 members of the local communities.

The overall objective of the action is to improve the socio-economic integration of disadvantaged rural communities in Georgia and contribute to poverty reduction. The specific objective of the action is to support an inclusive and community-led approach to rural development to improve the quality of life and economic conditions in Akhmeta Municipality.

The project is supported by the European Union within the framework of the European Neighbourhood Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (ENPARD). This project is part of the third ENPARD cycle in Georgia. Action Against Hunger has been selected as an implementing partner by the EU to implement projects during each cycle.
