State actors and CSOs meet to discuss Humanitarian Coordination in Syunik province

On February 2nd, 2024, Action Against Hunger in cooperation with Partnership and Teaching NGO organized a round table discussion in Goris in Armenia’s Syunik province within the scope of the project “Providing Urgent Humanitarian Assistance to support Displaced Families from Nagorno Karabakh” funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). The round table brought together more than 40 representatives of State and Civil Society Organisations (CSO) who have been actively engaged in supporting the humanitarian response to the displacement of people from Nagorno Karabakh, many thousands of whom are currently residing in Syunik province.

In Turkey alone, more than 800,000 people are facing another winter in temporary shelters and basic needs

One year after the devastating earthquakes that struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, thousands of families continue to face challenges and live in temporary settlements. "Over the past year our teams have been working hard to support the victims of the catastrophic earthquakes, but recovery is not yet complete. We continue to work on the rehabilitation of sanitation and water systems; we are distributing hot meals, shelter and hygiene materials and providing psychosocial care," explains Daniel Martin Santos, Action Against Hunger director for the Turkey operation.

The acute malnutrition admission trend among children under five (U5) is increasing due to the current crisis. Meanwhile, attacks on health care continue to be reported across the country. The Malnutrition Stabilisation Center that Action Against Hunger supports in Garsila, Central Darfur, was target of one of these attacks and was looted. Thousands of children in West Bank face triple threat: collapse of the education system, food crisis and destruction of the reference environment

Action Against Hunger is deeply concerned about how the extreme increase in violence in both the West Bank and Gaza is restricting children's right to education. Both the education systems in Gaza and the West Bank suffered limitations and extensive damage long before the attacks after 7 October 2023; however, the last few months have left an unprecedented number of child deaths, attacks on schools and restrictions on movement that do not allow children to have the education to which they are entitled.

International Day of Education

January 24th is the International Day of Education. Every year, this day recognizes and honors the role of education in every facet of our daily lives, as well as in the establishment of sustainable societies and the empowerment of peacemakers. At Action Against Hunger, education is a key focus of our work. Projects, such as the Economic and Social Participation of Vulnerable Displaced and Local Population in the South Caucasus (EPIC) project supports beneficiaries by providing coaching and training support to help them find employment and to become active changemakers in their local communities.

SIDA Supports the Urgent Needs of Refugees from Nagorno Karabakh in Armenia

Action Against Hunger, together with its local partner, “Partnership and Teaching,” has been providing humanitarian assistance to refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh who are displaced in Armenia. Assistance has been provided in the Syunik province over a period of four months from October 2023 to January 2024 and includes voucher assistance, in-kind support (food and hygiene items) distribution and the provision of mental health support services.
