Nigeria

Humanitarian Context

Though Nigeria has the second largest economy in Africa, it also has one of the highest numbers of severely malnourished children in the world: approximately 24% of children under five years old—more than a million children— suffer from malnutrition. In 2010, the Ministry of Health developed national guidelines for nutritional treatment with support from Action Against Hunger.

We opened offices in Abuja in 2010 and have since seen rapid growth in the country. Our approach from the start has been to work with both national agencies and local communities to build capacity to treat deadly malnutrition. We supported the Ministry of Health with the development of national guidelines for nutritional treatment and also partnered with Nigeria's Rural Water and Sanitation Agency to rehabilitate water points.

The ongoing and deepening humanitarian crisis in Northeast Nigeria has led to the displacement of over 1.5 million people while causing four million people to experience acute food insecurity and be in need of humanitarian assistance. Action Against Hunger has had ongoing operations in the state of Yobe since 2011, and has recently started activities in Borno state in 2014, home to the majority of Nigeria’s internally displace people. Our mission focuses on the immediate needs that have emerged following the waves of displacement, and aims to provide critical humanitarian multi-sectoral assistance through food aid, non-food item distributions, shelter, water and sanitation activities, economic recovery, and nutrition to victims of this complex emergency.

Last year, our teams assisted almost three million people in Nigeria. Action Against Hunger is one of the few humanitarian organizations with ongoing activities in Nigeria and the surrounding countries affected by the conflict. Our teams are performing constant assessments and will continue to enhance our response to the situation.
