From Odaisseh to Zahrani: Mahmoud's Journey of Resilience during escalation of hostilities in South Lebanon.

During the recent civil unrest in south Lebanon, Mahmoud found himself caught in the crossfire, forced to direct the challenges of displacement with his family. Formerly residing in Odaisseh, at the southern Lebanese borders, Mahmoud shared his story of resilience, emphasizing the impact of the emergency response provided by Action Against Hunger.Mahmoud– Montana Shelter – Zahrani – Lebanon

For four days during the escalation of the conflict, Mahmoud took refuge in his niece's house in Chiyah, Beirut. The proximity to the border made Odaisseh increasingly risky, prompting a series of relocations.

"One can host a person at their house for 3 to 5 days, but no one can host a person for more than that," Mahmoud reflected. Subsequently, he moved to his sister's house in Tyre for 5 days, and later returned to Odaisseh for 15 days. As the situation escalated, the family faced the harsh reality of continuous danger, prompting them to seek refuge in the Montana shelter in Zahrani.

The displacement took a toll on Mahmoud and his family, bringing about uncertainty and worry. However, the supportive community at the shelter eased some of the burdens. "Knowing the people that are here makes the displacement a bit easier for us", Mahmoud expressed. He underscored the significance of our continuous support, highlighting the key role of LHF funding in catering to the needs of the displaced. This assistance extends beyond simple provision, encompassing crucial elements such as providing breakfast meals, comfortable mattresses, pillows, blankets, and essential hygiene kits, all contributing to their overall well-being.

The impact on daily life extended beyond the emotional strain, affecting livelihood, access to education, and healthcare. Recounting a healthcare incident involving his wife, Mahmoud shared the financial challenges they faced. Jobless and in the middle of a crisis, they received support from connections and hospital negotiations, demonstrating the resilience of community bonds in times of hardship.

"Our future is mysterious, we do not know where we are heading to," he expressed, reflecting the collective fear and anticipation shared by many affected by the unrest. He questioned the fate of their homes and the duration of the crisis, emphasizing the widespread sense of fear among the displaced.

Discussing his children's spirit, Mahmoud highlighted the adaptability of the Lebanese, especially those in the south who have endured years of war in the past. His two older daughters are married, but his 14- year-old daughter and 24-year-old son are demonstrating remarkable strength in adapting to their new environment. Despite the challenging circumstances, Mahmoud underlined how his 14-year-old daughter coped with the unsettling circumstances. He shared, "At first, she was hiding from bombardment sounds, she overcame fear and found comfort, though the sounds still evoke some fright. Having friends here made it easier for her.”
