SIDA Supports the Urgent Needs of Refugees from Nagorno Karabakh in Armenia

Action Against Hunger, together with its local partner, “Partnership and Teaching,” has been providing humanitarian assistance to refugees from Nagorno-Karabakh who are displaced in Armenia. Assistance has been provided in the Syunik province over a period of four months from October 2023 to January 2024 and includes voucher assistance, in-kind support (food and hygiene items) distribution and the provision of mental health support services.

This assistance has been made possible with the financial support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) through its Rapid Response Mechanism.

Syunik province served as the first point of reception for the refugees from Nagorno Karabakh. The province was highly impacted by the huge influx of refugees as in the course of 5 days more than 100,000 people crossed the border into the province. Many thousands of people have remained in the province while others have sought refuge in other parts of Armenia.

The support provided arrived in time to help the refugees meet their urgent humanitarian needs while also relieving the workload of local village administration and state agencies in the provision of emergency support.

The following assistance has been provided:

• 500 households have received two times multi-purpose vouchers of a value of 40,000 AMD to purchase food, hygiene items and basic household utensils. 
• 250 households have received psycho-social support .
• 100 households have received food and hygiene packages. This support was designed to support those for families that have mobility issues. Door-to-door distribution has been organized to deliver the packages to these beneficiaries.
